How important is protein?

Updated: Jul 10, 2021

Every cell in the human body contains protein. If that doesn’t tell you how important it is for our bodies, I’m not sure what will. Proteins fuel our cells and powers our bodies.

We need to consume them daily so we can keep our cells in good shape and maintain our health as well.

Ok, but what exactly are proteins?

As I mentioned on my two previous blog posts, proteins are a part of the three primary macronutrients (fat, carbohydrates and proteins). Proteins consist of amino acids. Our bodies produce most of the amino acids we need however, we can’t produce 9 and we must get them from our diet.

Here are 5 reasons why we need plenty of protein everyday according to Piedmont Healthcare. 1) Build. It helps build bones, muscles, cartilage and skin. Nails and hair are mostly made of protein.

2) Repair. Our bodies use it to build and repair tissue (A must specially if you are exercising!).

3) Oxygenate. Red blood cells contain a protein that carries oxygen to our body.

4) Digest. Almost half of the protein you consume each day goes into making enzymes, that help you digest food.

5) Regulate. Protein helps in hormone regulation. Specially during puberty.

If you exercise, here are the fitness benefits! Help manage hunger.

Aid in mainting a healthy weight.

Reduces muscle loss.

Builds lean muscle.

Speeds recovery after exercise/injury.

So, where do we find the best sources of protein?

Plants and animals provide good sources of protein. However, while plants provide protein they don’t provide all of the essential amino acids. Meat, poultry, fish, eggs, milk, cheese, yogurt, quinoa and soyabeans are all source of complete protein, according to the Food and Nutrition Board of the Institute of Medicine.

Keep in mind that if you don’t consume meat or diary you need to know what amino acids each of the alternative sources you consume provide so you don’t lack them. I would recommend consulting a specialist.

Remember that you need a balanced diet paired with regular exercise and a smile for a healthy life! 😉
